February 9th Meeting Announcement: Solar Energy Short Term Output Variability

Solar energy is an intermittent resource varying with
season, location, and weather. Short-term variability (seconds and
minutes) occur when clouds pass in front of the sun and the output of
a photovoltaic (PV) system can drop from full power to almost zero in
a matter of seconds and fluctuate up and down at high frequency as
cloud fields evolve. The presentation describes the development of an
empirical approach to understand and model short-term variability and
to implement such a model to inform grid operators on the variability
impacts they should expect from the solar resource deployed on their
power grids. The presentation will be prefaced by an overview of the
potential of solar electric generation for the US and the world. Click on the title link for this news item for additional information.
